Rhyddings Park, Accrington

Permavoid Limited

A new 600 square metre Macadam Multi Use Games Area and Rainwater Harvesting facility has been constructed at Rhyddings Park, Oswaldtwistle by Thornton Contracts using their SudsSport Sustainable Drainage System.

The SudsSports system incorporates Permavoid lightweight, high strength plastic sub-base replacement, to provide a sustainable and cost-effective combined sports surface and water management system. The SudsSports System is overlain directly by a 40mm thickness open textured 20mm macadam layer and finished with 6mm permeable asphalt.

The system can accommodate approximately 85 cu.m of rainwater and is connected to a shallow proprietary package pumping station, which has an overflow to an existing surface water sewer. The system is designed and constructed to attenuate water underneath the MUGA, which is then pumped uphill to gardens nearby to be used as a watering facility at new allotments for local schools, maximising the sustainability benefits of the system.

Work began on the site in mid Sept 2010 and was completed in late October 2010.
